1)BRIDGE THE GAP - Investing in our future creatives

Date:                         Wednesday 26th May 2010

Region:                    South East

Venue:                      The Nuffield Theatre, Southampton

Times:                      10.30am - 3.30pm

Calling all arts and cultural organisations - are you already working with young volunteers or looking to initiate placements / work experience roles / internships?

ENYAN (English National Youth Arts Network) is delivering this event in partnership with Southampton’s Nuffield Theatre, to profile fantastic examples of how organisations have really succeeded in supporting young people into the creative sector and to encourage more organisations to develop opportunities.

The Regional Advisory Panel of ENYAN has identified that there is often a perceived gap in provision for young people who leave education but are interested in a career in arts and culture. What is clear is that there is wealth of knowledge in this region and many organisations are offering excellent schemes to ‘bridge that gap’. Some are extremely well resourced, structured and integral to the organisation’s workforce development, while others are under-resourced, developed as an ‘add on’ to existing projects - there is a complete mixture, but at present very little is communicated between organisations.

This event will be a fantastic networking and learning opportunity for South East organisations. It will provide a platform for young placement holders to tell you exactly what attracts them to a scheme. It will provide a forum for ensuring good practice, build up a regional picture of opportunities and will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your ideas, take away practical tools and develop your knowledge of how such schemes can benefit young people and your organisation!

You will hear case study presentations from organisations and young placement holders; there will be breakout sessions in the afternoon focusing on the quality of the placement, placement planning tools, professional development opportunities, the qualities of a good mentor, bursaries, funding and resourcing programmes.

A Market Place will also be available to delegates during the morning break and lunch period. We are marketing this area to you and separately to FE and HE students across the region, to encourage them to consider opportunities that are available to them. If you would like to hold a stand on the day of the event, please indicate this when you book online - there is no charge for stall holders.

Refreshments and a lunch buffet will be provided for all delegates.

To book your place, please complete the online booking form via: http://www2.enyan.co.uk/conferences/5

Once you have booked your place online, ENYAN will invoice you and on receipt of the £15 payment, your delegate place will be confirmed.

Don’t forget, ENYAN membership is completely free! To sign up go to www.enyan.co.uk

2) The Friends of Southampton's Museums, Archives & Galleries (FOSMAG) needs an editor for its twice-yearly Newsletter.

FOSMAG was founded (in 1977) with the purpose of advancing the public appreciation of arts and crafts by the promotion, support, assistance and improvement of Southampton's Museums, Archives and Galleries in co-operation with their managements and staff.  It is a registered charity with the Charity Commission and has a constitution.  Membership is around 200.  The Committee is drawn from the membership and no-one is salaried, though reasonable expenses can be claimed on production of receipts.

Voluntary work undertaken by FOSMAG includes envelope stuffing for the regular mail outs organised by the City Council's Arts and Heritage Service, curating the art gallery's slide library, overseeing the art gallery's book library, helping out at arts and heritage events in the city, etc.  Social events take place most months, consisting of fund-raising coffee mornings in the late autumn through to early spring, and outings to various places during the warmer months of the year.  The Friends' website is at www.fosmag.org.uk

Members also receive a 28 to 32-page Newsletter twice a year which is full of articles of interest and relevance.  In recent years the Newsletter has twice been the runner-up to the winner of the BAfM (British Association of Friends of Museums) annual newsletter prize.  It is a well-regarded publication and presents a good opportunity for someone wishing to develop their CV, or indeed for anyone who is interested in the arts and wants to be more closely involved with them.  I would say that the individual does need to be reasonably well organised, but beyond that the role is not a pressured one and there is a great deal of satisfaction in having a tangible product once the Newsletter goes to print.  If you, or someone you know, might be interested in taking on this voluntary role, please contact Christine Clearkin on clearkin@hotmail.com for more details.

With many thanks and all good wishes

Christine
